AUSI Snorkel Diver Instructor

 

Role

The AUSI Snorkel Diver Instructor is able to conduct:

• AUSI Snorkel Swimming programs
• Train and certify AUSI Snorkel Swimming Instructors
• Train and certify AUSI Snorkel Divers

Note: The level of certification is determined by the instructor’s duck diving ability, ie Level I – at least 6 m (20ft), Level II – at least 9 m (30ft) and level III – 12m (40 ft).

Prerequisites

Prior to participating on an AUSI Snorkel Diver Instructor Training Program candidates are required to meet the AUSI Snorkel Diver Instructor course prerequisites, which are:

• Be at least 18 years of age,
• Be certified medically fit to snorkel dive by a medical practitioner,
• Be able to swim 200 metres (220 yds) unaided in no more than five minutes and then immediately stay afloat for at least 10 minutes,
• Be a certified AUSI Snorkel Diver or approved equivalent,
• Have a current work place first aid certificate or approved equivalent,
• Have a current CPR certificate or approved equivalent,
• Have a current oxygen provider certificate or higher or approved equivalent,
• Show evidence of 25 snorkel dives in varying locations and conditions, and
• Have assisted on at least one AUSI Snorkel Diver course in the last twelve months or approved equivalent.

Training

The AUSI Snorkel Diver Instructor training course is designed to train the prospective instructor to the key areas of snorkel diver training, namely:

• Theory Knowledge
• Skill Development
• Accident Management
• Accident Management
• Practical Skills Training
• Dive Leadership, and
• Student Assessment.

NOTE: Life Support Techniques, Basic Seamanship and Basic Navigation are to be completed by home study in the evening and the AUSI Snorkel Diver Instructor Trainer should conduct a brief review to clarify any questions.

Assessment

Assessment is based on course results achieved in the following areas:

• Classroom Presentation, the candidate must present a minimum of two micro lessons, which must be different topics
• Practical Skill Training Presentation, the candidate must present a minimum of two micro lessons, which must be different topics
• Dive Leadership, the candidate must be involved with at least two different aspects of a dive leadership exercise including a full brief
• Accident Management, the candidate must present a pass standard for snorkel rescue during the course
• Snorkel Diving Theory Knowledge Examination, a closed book examination, minimum mark 80%
• AUSI Standards and Procedures Examination, an open book examination
• Snorkel Diver Instructor Fitness Tests
  • Swim, without the use of aids, 200 metres (220 yds) in no more than five minutes then immediately stay afloat for no less than 10 minutes
  • Snorkel swim, while neutrally buoyant, 800 metres (880 yds) in no more than 16 minutes
  • In the ocean, duck dive and retrieve an object from a depth of no less than six metres (20 ft) and no more than 12 metres (40 ft). This Certification Dive determines the level of certification, ie Level I - at least six metres (20 ft), Level II - at least nine metres (30ft) and Level III - 12 metres (40ft).
  • In the ocean, in no less than two metres of water, swim underwater a distance of 25 metres (30 yds) on one breath.

Results

Assessment results in the following competency-based grades:

• Pass: Awarded when the candidate achieves a pass in each of the following:
  • Classroom Presentation
  • Practical Skill Training Presentation
  • Dive Leadership
  • Accident Management
  • AUSI Snorkel Diving Theory Knowledge Examination
  • AUSI Standards and Procedures Examination
  • Snorkel Diver Instructor Fitness Tests
• Provisional: Awarded to a candidate when only one section is failed.
  Note: The candidate will be given a minimum of 30 days and maximum of 60 days to complete a retest in that area.
• Fail: Awarded when the candidate receives a fail in more than one area.

Certification requirements

Satisfactory completion of the course including fitness tests
