AUSI Scuba Instructor

Scuba Instructor (Open Water Scuba Instructor)

The AUSI Scuba Instructor is able to train and certify AUSI Scuba Divers

Prerequisites

Prior to participating on an AUSI Scuba Instructor Training Program candidates are required to meet the following course prerequisites:
  • Be at least 18 years of age,
  • Be medically fit to scuba dive (In Australia a medical certificate to AS/NZS 2299.1 is required),
  • Be a certified AUSI Level I Scuba Instructor or approved equivalent
  • Have completed at least 60 scuba dives in varying conditions,
  • Have a current work place first aid certificate,
  • Have a current CPR certificate
  • Have a current oxygen equipment certificate, and
  • Have completed pre-course assessment with an AUSI Level II Scuba Instructor or higher.

Pre-course Assessment

Before entry on an AUSI Instructor training course the prospective candidate must complete the following within three months prior to the commencement date of the course:
  • Complete all lesson reviews from AUSI Level II to Level VI Scuba Diver,
  • Gain no less than 90% on the AUSI Level VI Scuba Diver Theory Test,
  • Swim, without the use of aids 200 metres (220 yds) in no more than 5 minutes then stay afloat for 10 minutes,
  • Snorkel swim, while neutrally buoyant, 800 metres (880 yds) in no more than 16 minutes,
  • In the ocean, snorkel swim wearing but not using normal scuba, 1000 metres (1100 yds) in no more than 50 minutes,
  • In the ocean on scuba underwater using a compass swim a triangle of 30 metre (33 yd) sides and finish no more than 5 metres (6 yds) from the start point, and
  • In the ocean on scuba underwater without the use of navigational aids, swim out and back on a straight line a distance of 25 metres (27 yds) finishing no more than 5 metres (6 yds) from the starting point .

Training

The AUSI Scuba Instructor training course is designed to train the prospective instructor to the key areas of scuba diver training, namely:
  • Classroom Presentation,
  • Practical Skills Training,
  • Ocean Student Dives, and
  • Student Assessment.

Assessment

Assessment is based on course results plus the results of a final examination conducted by an independent AUSI Scuba Instructor Examiner.

Course assessment is based on results received during the course in the following areas:

  • Classroom Presentations,
  • Practical Skill Presentations,
  • Dive Leadership Assessments, and
  • Rescue Skills.

Final assessment is based on performance in the following areas:

  • AUSI Diving Theory Knowledge Examination - Closed book examination,
  • AUSI Standards and Procedures Examination - Open book examination,
  • Classroom Presentation,
  • Practical Skill Training, and
  • Dive Leadership Assessment.

Results

Pass: A pass is awarded when the candidate achieves a pass in each of the following
  • AUSI Instructor Theory Knowledge Examination,
  • AUSI Standards & Procedures Examination,
  • Classroom Presentations,
  • Practical Presentation,
  • Dive Leadership Assessments, and
  • Rescue Skills

Provisional: Provisional status can only be awarded to a candidate when only one section is failed. The candidate will be given a minimum of three months and maximum of six months to complete a retest in that area.

Fail: Awarded when the candidate receives a fail in more than one area.
